Composting at Red Hill Farm saves 5 tons of trash from going to the dump.
At the motherhouse kitchen (Our Lady of Angels Convent, Aston, Pennsylvania), kitchen waste that was previously tossed into the trash now goes into special trash cans located in the kitchen prep area. Food scraps (with the exception of meat products) go into the compost can, which is then dumped into Red Hill Farm’s compost pile where it is then processed and used as fertilizer.
What Difference Does it Make?
Forty pounds of kitchen scraps every day, Monday to Friday, all year long add up to 10,400 pounds (more than five TONS!) of trash that is NOT going into the dump every year. Instead, it’s processed into a viable organic fertilizer used on the farm.
